Formation of the Prepositional Case of Adjectives

Prepositional case of Russian adjectives is formed from nominative case, so is the form of adjectives. To make it easier let’s us study how this prepositional case works on adjectives which were differentiate into singular and plural form.

Singular Form Endings of Adjectives

1. Prepositional case ending for masculine and neuter adjectives which ends with letter -ый (masculine) and -ое (neuter), change them into ending -ом. Take a look at the example below, including transformation of form compared to Nominative Case in Russian Language:

  • Это старый стадион (nominative)
    Я стою на старом стадионе (prepositional)
  • Это новое письмо (nominative)
    Мы говорим о новом исьме (prepositional)

2. Prepositional case ending for feminine adjectives, usually ends with letter -ая. Change the ending with -ой. Here are the examples :

  • Это красная сумка (nominative)
    Мой роман в красной сумке (preposition)
  • Это красивая девушка (nominative)
    Сегодня утром они говорят об этом красивой девушке (preposition)

3. Prepositional case ending for soft stem masculine and neuter adjectives that usually ends with ending – ий, change it into -ем. For soft stem feminine, you can change it into -ей. Look at the examples :

  • Это синий дом (nominative)
    Я живу в синем доме (preposition)
  • Это синая рубашка (nominative)
    Мы уже читали каталог о синей рубашке (preposition)

4. Adjectives stem ends in 5 spelling letter (ж, ш, щ, ч, ц) , ending -ом becomes -ем and -ой becomes -ей. Here are some example of how it works :

  • в хорошем костюме
  • в хорошем море
  • в хорошей комнате

Plural Form Endings of Adjectives

1. You can change endings of Russian adjectives of the prepositional case into plural ending -ых.  Look at the examples below :

  • О новых зданиях
  • В красных сумках
  • На старых стадионах

2. You can change ending for soft stem plural adjectives into -их. Here are the examples :

  • О синих зданиях
  • В синих сумках
  • На синих стадионах

3. Adjectives stem ends in 7 spelling letter (к, г, ж, ш, щ, ч, ц), plural endings will be -их. For examples :

  • О больших зданиях
  • В хороших сумках
  • На широких стадионах
